Antioxidant capacity - Astaxanthin is a

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Studies comparing astaxanthin to other
well known antioxidants demonstrated astaxanthin to be 1000 times more
effective than vitamin E (a tocopherol) against lipid oxidation and 550
times more effective against singlet oxygen.
Anti-inflammatory effect -
Multiple studies have shown the ability of astaxanthin to reduce
inflammation, which could be considered the underlying mechanism for its
many beneficial effects. In one example, astaxanthin was shown to play a
role in cytokine regulation by inhibiting the expression of
inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.
